前回の創造基礎Ａに引き続き、ＡＬＴのRiana先生の知人のShaleelに授業に参加してもらいました。今回はShaleelの母方がマオリであることを踏まえ、New Zealandのマオリについて学びました。All Blacksで有名なラグビーの試合前のhakaをはじめ、マオリの神話・文化についてShaleelの解説もありながら紹介されました。授業の後半は、多文化共生の観点から以下の質問について考えました。生徒の解答（一部）です。

The Maori people use traditional tattoos to show their identity as a person and as a Maori.In 2013, a Maori woman who visited Japan was not allowed to enter Hokkaido Onsen because of the tattoos on her face. The world has a lot of diversity and is important to understand other cultures.
Do you think Hokkaido Onsen made the right decision?

It is a difficult problem, but it is the right decision. If the Maori people entered Onsen, in the Onsen Japanese people would be afraid of them. And when Japanese people with tattoo see them, they may get so angry. That’s so dangerous. But I have an idea. It is that when the people show passports to the clerk, the clerk allow them to enter Onsen. This makes Maori people happy.（これは難しい問題だが、正しい判断だった。もしマオリの人が温泉に入れば、日本人が彼らを怖がるだろうし、また入れ墨のある日本人が彼らを見たら怒るかもしれない。それはとても危険だ。ただ、１つアイデアがある。それは店員にパスポートを見せれば温泉に入ることが許されるというものだ。これでマオリの人も喜んでくれる。）
I think Hokkaido Onsen made the right dicision. Because the tattoos on a Maori woman’s face is seen by other people in Hokkaido Onsen. Person has tattoos look like frightening. It has no choice.However it is important to understand other cultures like Maori, so I have an idea. Onsen should prepare another room for people has tattoos. A worker in Onsen take people has tattoos to the room when they come to Onsen. Then the worker make them take a bath. （北海道の温泉は正しい判断をしたと思う。マオリの女性の顔にあるタトゥーは温泉に入っている人には怖く見えるからだ。それは仕方がない。しかしマオリのような違う文化を理解する事は重要なことなので、アイデアがある。温泉がタトゥーをしている人用に別の部屋を用意するべきだ。従業員はタトゥーの入っている人が来ればその部屋に入ってもらえばいい。）
I think Hokkaido Onsen made the right dicision. Today I learned that the tattoos are very important for the Maori people. But she visited Japan and she wanted to enter Japanese Onsen. I think in this case people should follow their country’s low. When I go to other country I behave as if I were the people in the country. For example I don’t use the hand sign which made their country’s people angry or sad. Each country has each culture and religion. So I think we should know the countries’ rules and follow them. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I think this is very important when we go abroad. （北海道の温泉は正しい判断をしたと思う。今日タトゥーがマオリの人々にとってとても大事であると知った。しかし、彼女は日本を訪れて温泉に入りたかった。このような場合は、その国のしきたりに従うべきだと思う。私が他の国に行ったら、その国の人のように行動する。例えばその国の人が怒ったり悲しんだりするようなジェスチャーやしぐさはしない。それぞれの国にはそれぞれの文化や宗教がある。だからそれらのしきたりを知って従わなければならないと思う。郷に入れば郷に従え。外国に行くときにはこれがとても大切だと思う。）
I think it is very difficult, but I think it made the right decision. Certainly, it should understand other cultures and allow her to enter Hokkaido Onsen. However, it isn’t realistic. Can you see the tattoos on Maori people’s face without feeling bad image? I think you can’t do this. Generally speaking, Japanese people think understanding other cultures is important, but they don’t do anything to understand them. They unconsciously think that someone change bad customs. No one try to do actions.If Hokkaido Onsen allowed her to enter Hokkaido Onsen, the fact will be known to a lot of people and customers of Hokkaido Onsen will decrease.I want to say that Hokkaido Onsen made the wrong decision. However, I can’t say it. It is the present circumstance.（とても難しいが、正しい判断だったと思う。確かに他の文化を理解して温泉に入るのを許可するべきだったが、それは現実的ではない。タトゥーが入ったマオリの女性の顔を見て恐い印象を持たない事は出来るだろうか。それはできないと思う。一般的に言って、日本人は異文化を理解する事は大切だと思っているが、彼らは何もしない。そしてつい悪い習慣は誰かが変えてくれると思ってしまう。そして誰も行動を起こそうとしない。もし北海道の温泉が彼女に温泉に入るのを許可したら、その事実は多くの人に知れて、そこに訪れる人は少なくなるだろう。私が言いたいのは、北海道の温泉は間違った決断をしたけれど、そうとは言い切れない。それが現状なのだ。）
