99th SGH Mail – Liberal Arts Project
Lively and Exciting Lessons with Elementary School Students
December 12th 2015
Activities were held in the large lecture hall, multi-purpose room, social studies room, science classroom, and the gym.
One of the “liberal arts projects” our school does is called the “foundation of wisdom”. This project is about creating and communicating wisdom with other students, from elementary, junior high, high school, and university. On December 12th, we invited five elementary schools to join our “Elementary and high school joint study day” as part of that.
Students of SGH, ESS, and volunteers taught lessons to the elementary school students. The purpose was to develop the international and questioning minds of the children. Our students had fun with the children as English, chemistry, social studies, math, calligraphy, and PE teachers.
Some of the elementary school student’s impressions:
- Our school used to be a rice field. It was different from now. It was fun to learn some history. (Social studies)
- Visual illusions and many other interesting things were fun! (Math)
- I was glad to learn how to run fast. Playing banana tag was fun. (PE)
- I made an artificial egg out of salmon and nylon threads. Making the artificial egg was great. (Chemistry)
- It was fun to write my favourite words on big paper. (Calligraphy)
- I could introduce myself in English because the teachers taught me difficult English in an easy way. (English)
Some Nishiko student’s impressions:
- Any worry about how to communicate with children and answer their questions went away as soon as we started. They looked happy. The image of them discussing and laughing around a map reminded me of the delights of studying.
- How to teach and explain things to children simply was difficult, but I felt happy when they could understand.
