The weather forecast for the day was rain, but it was only raining a little when we started our activities. In the morning, we ate breakfast at 8:30 am and discussed the day’s plans, then we divided into two groups and left the hotel.
Today’s main activities were (1) participating in a workshop at the MIT museum and (2) an MIT campus tour.
During the workshop at the MIT museum we were taught how to program robots using an iPad. We were able to move and modify the robots. All of us were very interested in the activity so we participated actively. After the workshop, we looked around the MIT museum.
During the MIT campus tour, MIT students showed us around their large campus. The tour lasted for one and a half hours. We were able to see things like a lecture room and a library. We also enjoyed shopping at The Coop at MIT.
We ate lunch at the MIT cafeteria. It was spring vacation for the MIT students, but it was still crowded there. There were other groups of Japanese high school students eating there too. We ate things like hamburgers. Our stomachs were tired after eating because we were not accustomed to the size of the food. After eating, and thanks to the trip leaders, we were able to stop by John F. Kennedy’s birthplace. Then we went back to the hotel.
At the hotel we had a meeting and the trip leaders told us to reconsider the purpose of our trip to the US. Mr. Ogasahara advised us to try to speak English all day and to become interested in the environment around us. He told us not to nod, but to speak and if our partner doesn’t reply, it means that they could not hear us or that they did not understand us. Each students wrote in their journal.
Tomorrow we are going to visit Boston University, the Japanese Consult and more.
