This morning all of the students had breakfast together. Each student had to check out of the hotel by themselves. The first group of 23 students left the hotel at 10:40 am and went to the airport by shuttle bus. The second group of 17 students left the hotel at 11:40 am. Then all of the students checked in at the airport and underwent a security check. Students must have been surprised at the difference between the security checks in Japan and those in America. In America, the students were made to not only open their baggage, but also to take off their shoes and go through body scanners. After that, they had lunch at the food court in the airport and enjoyed shopping freely until it was time to board the plane.
San Francisco International Airport is a very large airport, which has as many as 30 gates for United Airlines domestic flights alone! There were a lot of shops between the gates, so the students were able to pass the time. They enjoyed communicating with the clerks in the shops and felt happy that they were able to do things like order food successfully in English.
Flight UA242, which the first group of students took, left at 2:20 pm after a delay of 30 minutes. Flight UA444, which the second group of students took, left at 6:30 pm after a delay of 2 hours. The second group of students arrived at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Boston at 4:15 am, after the first group of students had already gone to bed. After being given some information about the trip and listening to the plan for the next day by Derek, the trip leader, every student went to their own room with a package of sandwiches. Tomorrow’s activities start at 10;00 am.
